A diamond-like carbon coating on the titanium axle swaps out the original's stainless steel, shedding weight from the inside of the pedal rather than thinning the outer body. That weight target pulled platform area in slightly from the original DEL, a deliberate tradeoff on a single-sided design that had little material to spare in the first place.
